Opening reception: March 4th, 6:00-10:00 pm. On view through March 27th.
Featuring work from Molly Landreth (Seattle), Amelia Tovey (Sydney, Australia), Rachel Papo (NYC), Carmen Winant (San Francisco) and Sarah McKemie (Tulsa). Curated by Ashley d’Avignon Goodwin (PDX).
Intimate Strangers is an exhibition of photo portraits by various female artists. Unlike the images in so many other such girl-based curations, which feature fear, oppression, and sexual rebellion/objectification, Intimate Strangers represents individuals who see what they want and are already taking it. The subjects in these portraits are empowered and not trying to hide it. They offer a refreshing look at feminism, one that doesn’t fight as much for visibility, as it does for creative right. This show isn’t so much about women as it is about the power of the portrait to create a rich story with a single glance. Barriers between the viewer and portrait subject are erased deftly by the artists’ acumen, leaving all who see these pictures with the satisfying and haunting sensation that more has transpired than is supposed to between two strangers.
