Tribute Gallery presents the Portland debut of Tyler Kohlhoff. A graduate of Whitman College, Kohlhoff now lives in Portland, Oregon and works throughout the Northwest as a photographer and a teaching artist. His shows include solo and group regional exhibitions, and he has worked with children through the Right Brain Initiative and Caldera’s Hello Neighbor Project. Kohlhoff’s pieces were most recently featured in the High Desert Journal, Volume 10.
“Inland Empires” focuses on the transitional habitats of the Interior West. In a series of two studies, the artist leverages anti-narrative to explore space as found artifacts of the abandoned. Housework explores the interiors of once-called home; Riverside explores the desolate landscapes of Southern California.
The images repeat the theme through installation. Photographs are mounted into light boxes contrived from more found artifacts and fluorescent light fixtures. The backlit photography clusters in space, resembling nodes on a circuit. Wiring pinned to the wall behind the images suggests a chip board’s gold leaf patterns.

Group Exhibition — New Works On Paper
January 7th through January 30th, 2010
Opening Reception January 7th, 2010 6pm-9pm
Tribute Gallery presents Play for Keeps, a group exhibit of new works on paper by a dynamic group of national artists. An opening reception will be held January 7th from 6pm – 9pm featuring live music provided by beloved local DJ Chris Chase. The show runs through January 31, 2010.
Play for Keeps was designed by guest curators Elizabeth Lamb and Chloe Gallagher to explore the often underrated importance of play.
Featured artists include Jon MacNair from Baltimore, MD whose playful yet eerie works of ink on paper have earned him a national following. Joshua Witten, hailing from Fort Collins, IN, works in a variety of media and possesses an impressive mastery of his bold, graphic style. Mixed media artist Patrick Haemmerlein from Los Angeles builds arresting urban images from the ground up using his own photography and source material. Ashley Sloan, a local Portland artist, will be exhibiting clever, thought-provoking graphite works. And, Max Kauffman, hailing from Denver, CO, whose colorful, folkloric works have been exhibited at a number of prominent national galleries, will also be featured. The exhibit will also include works by Brett Anderson, Huy Nguyen, Garric Simonsen, Angela Dawn, Breanne Rupp, Megan Marie Myers, Brian Costello, Jackie Bos, Karri Dieken, Stephan Ferreira, Mark Colman, Heidi Elise Wirz, Coco Papy, Sally Gilmore, Mark Olwick, Louise Krampien and Cara Tomlinson.
Tribute Gallery is located at 328 NW Broadway #117 Portland, OR 97209 and will be open Saturdays in January from 11am to 3pm and by appointment.

Three premiere printmaking artists will be featured in our December, 2009 exhibit. Shawn Demarest, Wendy Kahle, and R. Anthony Askew, long-time members of Print Arts Northwest(PAN), will be exhibiting original prints at Tribute Gallery.
Their works range from Shawn Demarest’s etchings filled with surreal and humorous social commentary, through colorfully expressive oil on paper monotype abstracts by California printmaker R. Anthony Askew, to serene black and white landscape etchings of Portland artist Wendy Kahle.
Shawn Demarest: “I am moved by both the human condition and the world around me. More specifically, the characters and interactions that appear in my etchings certainly arrive from the strangeness of being human – and the funny interactions and lessons I experience. The other strong motivating force is my love of Portland, creative people, and the urban landscape. Ultimately, my intent is to approach my work without preconception.”
R. Anthony Askew: “As an arts educator and instructor of painting, drawing, printmaking, and commercial art, I am drawn to innovation and have developed new printmaking techniques using traditional forms of printmaking: intaglio, silkscreen, and monoprints, which offer great range of color and form. The deepest satisfaction comes from spontaneous discovery and surprise.”
Wendy Kahle: “The process of coaxing out of a flat piece of copper the illusion of light, space, form and texture fascinates me. The etching technique I use for this process is predominately aquatint; utilizing a variety of image-making techniques. The monochromatic properties of intaglio printmaking suit my exploration of the subtle and dramatic qualities of light and form in the landscape.”
This knock-out show will fill the intimate Tribute Gallery loft in December, with a First Thursday opening on December 3rd, 2009, 6:00pm – 9:00 pm.
Gallery hours: Saturday from 11am to 3pm, by appointment as well special updates via twitter.

Tribute Gallery is seeking submissions for winter show paying tribute to the often unrecognized importance of play. Dutch historian and cultural theorist John Huizinga once wrote, “Play is a uniquely adaptive act, not subordinate to some other adaptive act, but with a special function of its own in human experience.” Play for Keeps will be a juried show of works on paper. Artists are encouraged to explore the theme from multiple angles, from the innocent delight of fort building to the cathartic release of competition. Even in adult life, when we have so much to lose, we continue to play for keeps. To submit email up to three images and/or additional questions to PlayForKeeps1.10@gmail.com. Please include media, dimensions, and potential pricing. Sales will be split 50/50% between the artist and the gallery. There will be no entry fee for submission, however all shipping costs must be covered by the artist. Play for Keeps will be juried by guest curators Elizabeth Lamb, White Box Gallery Coordinator and Chloe Gallagher an independent curator and former director of Fenario Gallery, Eugene, OR. There is no limit for media type, but all works should be works on paper, and be ready to hang. Play For Keeps will be held at Tribute Gallery, January 2010.
For all other submissions please email TheTributeGallery @ gmail.com for consideration.
