CONVERSATION PIECE: Subterranean Homesick Blues Realization Project 2011

A project organized by Reza Safavi, Garric Simonsen and John van Veen in collaboration with Brian Wilson, Tribute Gallery and Disjecta.

This Saturday from 1-4pm @ Disjecta // 8371 N Interstate Ave
Portland, OR 97217

This project will travel via school bus from Spokane, Washington to Portland, Oregon and document conversations concerning interconnectivity between everyday human activities, science and the fundamental nature of reality and existence.

Curiosity moves life forward. Our gift of being able to convert abstract thoughts into models of reality both hinders and facilitates our ability to grow intellectually. In today’s cultural matrix, we see social roles being replaced with deteriorating, mind numbing, less energizing pursuits that paralyze critical thought and offer no tangible insight for intellectual growth.

Our intent with this project is to offer a temporary place to educate and converse upon alternative methods of stimulating growth within our minds and our communities. Please join us and bring your own thoughts, ideas and questions. Look for the big yellow school bus.

Garric Simonsen is a maker of things and a musician who spends his free time thinking about how little time there is to think about things worth thinking about.

John van Veen is a genius mathematician, scientist and theoretical mastermind whom at the drop of a hat will debate virtually anything with anyone, anywhere.

“LASHES” is a collaborative response to “Violence” and “The Sublime Object of Ideology” by: Slavoj Žižek. J.Brown and Courtney Cullen have begun to work on a cross continental collaboration to create and installation which includes, sculpture, print media, and animation. All to envelope the viewer into a discourse brought up by Žižek’s writings and philosophical stance. They are attempting to build a dialect with the other artists and curators in PLACE’s In(ter)dependence show as well as, make a parallel between the Portland art community, modern philosophy, and sociological issues.

Courtney received her BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is currently pursuing her MFA from the University of Massachusetts. She enjoys making awkward objects, loves textured spray paint and needs two pairs of scissors at all times because one of them is always missing. Courtney resides in Amherst, Massachusetts with her partner and two cats.

J.Brown currently lives in Portland, Oregon and works as a gallery assistant to Tim Mahan at Half/Dozen Gallery, while working full time. He has also been known to act as a curator, teacher and writer. J.Brown has also received his BFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania; he enjoys reading, cycling, and puppies. Sarah Farahat received her BFA in Intermedia Studies from PNCA in 2009. She is an activist-artist who challenges her audience to engage with topics and subjects that often are only encountered through 10-second sound bytes on CNN news. Her perspective originates from a deep connection to her participants, whether they are Iraqi immigrants, Central American freedom fighters or, as in the case of “Ahlan,” Palestinians whose daily lives are lived under the often out-of-focus lens of the world.

Sarah’s travels to Palestine and the West Bank were captured with video, photographs and visceral memories of those she encountered. “Ahlan” a greeting she heard everyday, simply means, “Welcome!” in Arabic. This most common greeting comes from coffee shops, old friends, family, and most importantly strangers. Always, people are welcome.

Curated by Andrea (Ray) Boyle, “Ahlan,” explores bridging the experience of Palestinians living in the West Bank and those in Gaza with this intermedia installation. With photos depicting youth in the West Bank and a hanging installation of the threatening leaflets dropped by the Israeli Defense Forces over Gaza, Sarah’s work is both emotionally and visually engaging. “Ahlan,” is a conversation piece welcoming in those who wish to explore the sensitive topic of apartheid, occupation, and oppression.

Throughout the month there will be nights of conversation focused around people’s experience of Palestine, their stories and insights.

Leslie Hickey received her BA in Studio Art and English from Whitman College. With an undergraduate background in printmaking, she brings a printer’s sensibility to her current work, using analog processes to carefully craft each print in the color darkroom. Her professional experiences include working in the custom black and white lab at the Maine Photographic Workshops and, most recently, photo assisting at Caldera.

Jonathan Marrs is a visual artist based out of Portland, Oregon. He received his BA from Azusa Pacific University and his MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Jonathan’s research has focused on documentary practices, identity, and subjectivity. His work has been displayed in the US from Portland to Los Angeles, Lancaster, and Montpelier.

“Trans-IT-ion” is a group show curate by Jason Brown as a theoretical discourse expressing the shift of metaphysical post modern art formats and theory, to a much more personal however, universal expression of contemporary issues. “Trans-IT-ion has artist ranging from regional Portland artist to Poland, Boston, Louisiana, New York, and Pittsburgh. With such a wide demographic of young artist through out the United State and abroad it is clear that there is a pull away from the dogma’s of post modern issues, to the growing social, economic, environmental, and political upheaval and the anxiety which we face.
