Jordan Thomas Mitchell just arrived in Portland two months ago and is still processing the last year he spent in China. While there he was in pursuit of numerous things. What he left with is what he wants to share with you, as he explores the people, places and mixed emotions of his time in Beijing, Kunming, and Er Yuan Village in Yunnan, China.

Opening June 3, 2010, 6pm – 9pm; Closes June 18, 2010.

In artist Jonathan Marrs’s effort to attain some semblance of a life worth living, he is constantly performing. There is an internal desire to become a person of worth, both individually and socially. His “becoming” is a strange practice of repetition, trials, and risk; but it is neither simple nor steady. As time wavers on, Marrs indulges in relentless effort of living up to enigmatic expectations.

Jonathan Marrs constructs and documents performances to investigate how social power influences identity, masculinity, and adolescence. His own body is used as a tool to manifest the subconscious/irrational life of the psyche through performances that involve intuition, chance, and collaboration. While the imagery leans toward surreal behavior, it upholds a strong relationship to the real, the document, the always-already present.

Jonathan Marrs is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. He received his BA from Azusa Pacific University and his MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Jonathan’s research has focused on documentary practices, identity, and subjectivity. His work has been displayed in Los Angeles, Lancaster, Montpelier, and Portland.
