In artist Jonathan Marrs’s effort to attain some semblance of a life worth living, he is constantly performing. There is an internal desire to become a person of worth, both individually and socially. His “becoming” is a strange practice of repetition, trials, and risk; but it is neither simple nor steady. As time wavers on, Marrs indulges in relentless effort of living up to enigmatic expectations.
Jonathan Marrs constructs and documents performances to investigate how social power influences identity, masculinity, and adolescence. His own body is used as a tool to manifest the subconscious/irrational life of the psyche through performances that involve intuition, chance, and collaboration. While the imagery leans toward surreal behavior, it upholds a strong relationship to the real, the document, the always-already present.
Jonathan Marrs is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. He received his BA from Azusa Pacific University and his MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Jonathan’s research has focused on documentary practices, identity, and subjectivity. His work has been displayed in Los Angeles, Lancaster, Montpelier, and Portland.

“Marginal Strands” is the second installment in Dustin Zemel’s Stare Hard Series, a continuing development of works that explore veiled fabrications of story and production in popular media and their effects on our day-to-day existence. “Marginal Strands” is a collection of pieces that recontextualize a single episode of Fox’s Glee to call attention to the intricate yet invisible narrative complexities that allow Glee the success and popularity it has earned in its first season on air.
