The Tribute Gallery

Three premiere printmaking artists will be featured in our December, 2009 exhibit.  Shawn Demarest, Wendy Kahle, and R. Anthony Askew, long-time members of Print Arts Northwest(PAN), will be exhibiting original prints at Tribute Gallery.

Their works range from Shawn Demarest’s etchings filled with surreal and humorous social commentary, through colorfully expressive oil on paper monotype abstracts by California printmaker R. Anthony Askew, to serene black and white landscape etchings of Portland artist Wendy Kahle.

Shawn Demarest: “I am moved by both the human condition and the world around me. More specifically, the characters and interactions that appear in my etchings certainly arrive from the strangeness of being human – and the funny interactions and lessons I experience. The other strong motivating force is my love of Portland, creative people, and the urban landscape. Ultimately, my intent is to approach my work without preconception.”

R. Anthony Askew: “As an arts educator and instructor of painting, drawing, printmaking, and commercial art, I am drawn to innovation and have developed new printmaking techniques using traditional forms of printmaking: intaglio, silkscreen, and monoprints, which offer great range of color and form. The deepest satisfaction comes from spontaneous discovery and surprise.”

Wendy Kahle: “The process of coaxing out of a flat piece of copper the illusion of light, space, form and texture fascinates me. The etching technique I use for this process is predominately aquatint; utilizing a variety of image-making techniques. The monochromatic properties of intaglio printmaking suit my exploration of the subtle and dramatic qualities of light and form in the landscape.”

 This knock-out show will fill the intimate Tribute Gallery loft in December, with a First Thursday opening on December 3rd, 2009, 6:00pm – 9:00 pm.

Tribute Gallery is seeking submissions for winter show paying tribute to the often unrecognized importance of play. Dutch historian and cultural theorist John Huizinga once wrote, “Play is a uniquely adaptive act, not subordinate to some other adaptive act, but with a special function of its own in human experience.” Play for Keeps will be a juried show of works on paper. Artists are encouraged to explore the theme from multiple angles, from the innocent delight of fort building to the cathartic release of competition. Even in adult life, when we have so much to lose, we continue to play for keeps. To submit email up to three images and/or additional questions to PlayForKeeps1.10@gmail.com. Please include media, dimensions, and potential pricing. Sales will be split 50/50% between the artist and the gallery. There will be no entry fee for submission, however all shipping costs must be covered by the artist. Play for Keeps will be juried by guest curators Elizabeth Lamb, White Box Gallery Coordinator and Chloe Gallagher an independent curator and former director of Fenario Gallery, Eugene, OR. There is no limit for media type, but all works should be works on paper, and be ready to hang. Play For Keeps will be held at Tribute Gallery, January 2010.

 “BEYOND THE RABBIT HOLE”

Portland, Oregon – Tribute Gallery at Everett Street Lofts presents “Beyond the Rabbit Hole” featuring works by Jerred Breeden, Ian Seniff, and Anna Solcaniova King.

In life it is often getting where we want to go or need to go but it’s often the adventure and things we don’t plan on that truly inspire us.  See the work of Jerred, Ian, Anna and maybe some others and see what happens when you follow @ Alice.

Show opens First Thursday, November 5th, from 6-9 p.m. Gallery hours are on Saturdays from 11am-3pm, or by an appointment. The show will hang through November 18^th, and then will vanish down the Rabbit Hole.

In honor of Pacific Northwest College of Art’s centennial academic year Tribute Gallery present’s SE(XXY) PLASTIC featuring works by two PNCA alum, Adrienne L.B. Butzer and Seth A. Leamer.

THE SECRET LIVES OF CHILDHOOD IDOLS

No woman has kept up with the pace of fashion like Barbie. She is always perfectly dressed for any occasion: a night on the town, going to work, a first date or going to the beach. Each of her outfits are perfectly accessorized with shoes, purses, sunglasses and jewelry etc. Adrienne Butzer’s photographs are a tribute to the brilliant work of David Levinthal’s Polaroid portraits of Millicent Robert’s Barbies. Butzer captures the essential Barbie, as she was meant to look. Millions of young women have seen in Barbie the embodiment of there dreams and glamour. Butzer brings it back into the realm of reality.

Meanwhile… a long time ago in a Pennsylvania town far far away, a small boy obsessively collected action figures. While he slept they came to life (or so he fervently believed) and had many adventures deep into the night. Epic tales of lost droids and conquered dollhouses raged until the morning. But, like many things, his plastic idols were slowly forgotten. Now that the little boy is all grown up. Seth Leamer’s paintings imagine the life his childhood heroes are leading now.

Adrienne L.B. Butzer, graduate of PNCA in 2007 has a background in photography and printmaking. She is currently working on a breast cancer book entitled “Invasion of Landscapes”.

Seth A. Leamer graduated with a BFA in Painting from PNCA in 2007. He currently creates murals for Trader Joe’s stores in Oregon and Washington.

We thought it would be fun join Rebar’s with their international project PARK(ing) Day this year.  Plenty of parking was available just outside Everett Station Lofts.  Over fifty people came throughout the day.  Hanging out in the park included making new friends and talking about a range of creative topics.  Our spot was simple but thoughtful with heirloom quilts and borrowed props.

Tribute Gallery presents its September First Thursday Artwalk show lineup, including the works of Jeff Phegley, Amaren Colosi, Karl Ramentol and Jerod Ruleaux. The exhibition is Curated by Tribute Gallery founder Brian T. Wilson.
